The PTP remote
thermostat kit is suitable for all Post '96 S1 Elise's and all S2
Elise's (K series only). This is the latest development in the fight
against thermal shock within the engine, which is one of the biggest
causes of HGF (head gasket failure).
This kit has been
designed specifically for the Lotus, it needs no modifications to the
existing coolant system, and you simply replace two coolant pipes and
remove the current thermostat Both Land Rover and MG Rover have
been using this system for a number of years now with great success.
The idea behind the new remote thermostat is its capability in
converting the pressure difference into coolant flow. There is a big
difference in the bypass size between the PRRT and the original
thermostat housing. The advantage of this is in its own description:
Pressure Relief. There is always a difference between engine coolant
inlet and outlet, especially with the thermostat partially closed. This
is because the water pump (placed right at the engine inlet) struggles
to "suck" the coolant through small and long pipes while at the engine
outlet the same small and long pipes reduce the outgoing coolant flow.
The main purpose of the water pump is to supply flow and not pressure,
some of its work is just wasted in cavitation. The short, very high
flow bypass eradicates all the above issues. This bypass also ensures a
much higher flow and lower pressure when the thermostat is closed,
eliminating problems at any temperature.
The kit is supplied with black silicon hoses, an 82°C PRRT thermostat
and all fittings, plus full fitting instructions. The installation should take two to
three hours by a competent DIY Lotus owner. Alternatively it can be
fitted in our workshops hear at PTP, click here for contact details.
